Flutter or Native: How to Choose for Your App

One Flutter codebase for iPhone and Android, or two native apps? The right choice depends on what your app has to do. Here is how to decide.

Many new apps need to run on both iPhone and Android. There are two main ways to build them: two native apps, written in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android, or one Flutter app that runs on both from a single codebase. Both produce real apps that are published on the App Store and Google Play. The right choice depends on what your app needs to do.

When Flutter Is the Better Fit

With Flutter, one team writes the app once. New features reach both platforms at the same time, and most bugs are fixed in one place. Because Flutter draws its own interface, the design looks the same on iPhone and Android. Release builds are compiled to native code, so typical business apps run smoothly. Camera, location, maps, push notifications, payments and in-app purchases are available through well-supported plugins. This makes Flutter a strong choice for booking, delivery, marketplace, shopping, chat and fitness apps.

When Native Is Worth It

Native development makes sense when most of the app depends on features of one platform. Examples are apps built mainly around Bluetooth devices or other hardware, heavy background processing, or extensions such as watch apps and home-screen widgets. It also makes sense if you only need one platform and already have a native team, or if your app must use new iOS or Android features on the day they are released. Games with heavy 3D graphics are a separate case: they are usually built with a game engine such as Unity.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

  • Do you need both iPhone and Android at launch?
  • How much of the app is standard screens (forms, lists, maps, payments) and how much depends on the device?
  • Who will maintain the app after launch, and which skills does that team have?
  • Can your budget cover building and maintaining two separate codebases?

Our Approach

Flutter is our main technology for iOS and Android. You can also hire Flutter developers to join your own team. For most business apps, one Flutter codebase is the practical choice. When a feature needs platform-specific code, we write that part in Swift or Kotlin and keep the rest shared. If you are not sure which way to go, send us your feature list and we will tell you which approach fits.
