Adding AI to Your App: What Is Realistic

Chatbots, voice and document reading can save your users time. Here is what each one does well, where it still makes mistakes and how to plan for cost and privacy.

AI features are no longer only for large companies. Models from OpenAI, Google (Gemini) and Anthropic (Claude) can be connected to a mobile app through their APIs, so a small team can add features that were hard to build a few years ago. Each feature has limits, though, and it helps to know them before you plan.

Chatbots and Assistants

Realistic: a chatbot that answers questions about your products, services or policies, guides users through a process or helps them write a message. It works best when it is given your own content, such as your FAQs, product data or help pages, and clear rules about what it may answer. Not realistic: a bot that is always right. Language models can give confident but wrong answers. For medical, legal or payment topics, show where each answer comes from or hand the conversation to a person.

Voice

Speech-to-text and text-to-speech are now good enough for voice notes, dictation, voice search and spoken replies. Accuracy depends on background noise, accents and language, so test early with real users in the languages they actually speak, for example Urdu and English. In a spoken conversation, response time matters as much as accuracy.

Document Reading

AI can read invoices, receipts and forms, pick out fields such as names, dates and amounts, and summarise long PDFs. This removes a lot of manual typing. It does not remove checking: let users confirm important values before they are saved. Blurry photos and handwriting reduce accuracy.

Cost and Privacy

Most AI services charge per use, so the cost grows with the number of users and requests. Set limits per user, avoid sending more text than needed and track usage from the first day. Keep your API keys on your own server, not inside the app, where they could be copied. The data you send is processed by the AI provider, so check the provider's data terms, send only what the feature needs and explain it in your privacy policy.

Start With One Feature

Pick the feature that saves your users the most time, build it well and see how people use it before you add more. We build AI features into Flutter apps with OpenAI, Gemini and Claude, and you can also hire our AI developers for your team. We are also building our own AI app, Yaadi, which reads household papers, explains them and turns due dates into reminders. If you are thinking about AI for your app, tell us the task you want it to handle.
